There is something inherently timeless about a Chicago wedding. The city's rich history, iconic architecture, and unmistakable sense of grandeur provide a beautiful foundation for celebration, and Bridget & Steve’s wedding was no exception.
The day began at St. Clement Catholic Church, a Chicago church in Lincoln Park known for its elaborate architectural details including one-of-a-kind mosaics and stained glass windows. Later, guests gathered for the reception at the Chicago Cultural Center, where the setting shifted to one of Chicago's most iconic buildings under the Tiffany stained glass dome.
For their wedding stationery, the design needed to feel classic, polished, and timeless with just enough of a twist to make it unmistakably Bridget & Steve’s.
Designing Custom Wedding Stationery Inspired by Chicago
A wedding invitation should feel like an introduction.
Before guests see the ceremony, walk into the reception, or experience any of the details you've spent months planning, they recieve the invitation suite. It establishes the first impression of the celebration and gives guests a glimpse into what is to come.
Bridget & Steve wanted that first impression to feel sophisticated, formal, and connected to the beautiful Chicago settings they had chosen for their wedding. A custom venue illustration of St. Clement was at the heart of the invitation design.
A Classic Chicago Wedding Invitation with a Twist
Classic wedding stationery is timeless for a reason.
There is an elegance to intentional typography, fine paper, and considered composition that doesn't need to follow a trend to feel special. But classic doesn't have to mean predictable.
The classic foundation
The foundation of a timeless wedding suite comes from the elements that will still feel beautiful years from now:
Refined typography
A thoughtful hierarchy of information
Elegant proportions
Beautiful materials
A restrained, sophisticated design language
Details that feel intentional rather than excessive
The twist
Then comes the part I love most: finding the opportunity to do something a little different.
A “twist” doesn't necessarily need to be dramatic. In luxury stationery, it can be as subtle as a distinctive paper or envelope, a unique custom illustration, or a detail that only reveals itself once the invitation is in hand.
The goal isn't to add something unexpected simply for the sake of being unexpected. It's to find the detail that makes the design feel specific to the couple. That is the difference between an invitation that is simply beautiful and one that feels like their invitation.
Classic, but not expected
The design begins with a timeless foundation, but there is enough personality woven through the details that the finished suite doesn't feel like it could belong to just anyone.
That philosophy is at the heart of classic wedding stationery with a twist.
For Bridget and Steve, this meant infusing the suite with their fun personalities and the celebratory spirit they wanted their guests to feel. Miniature icons of rings, champagne, and a disco ball added just the right touch of whimsy, giving the otherwise classic invitation suite its signature twist.

From start to finish: a cohesive wedding paper design
The invitation begins the story.
The ceremony establishes the feeling.
And the day-of stationery brings all of those elements together.
A cohesive wedding doesn't mean every detail needs to be identical. In fact, the most sophisticated celebrations avoid that kind of repetition. Instead, cohesion can come through subtle connections: a recurring typographic style, repeated colors or materials, or a shared motif. The result is a wedding design that feels thoughtful from beginning to end.
Rather than simply recreating the invitation on each piece, we carried its defining elements throughout the day in fresh and unexpected ways.
The venue illustration from the invitation made a reappearance on the ceremony programs, creating a meaningful connection to one of their special places in Chicago.
The envelope color palette was carried into the reception through velvet ribbon details on the menus, adding dimension while subtly tying the paper pieces together.
Typography returned throughout the day in different hierarchies, allowing each piece to feel distinct while still belonging to the same visual family.
The custom icons appeared throughout the signage and cocktail napkins at different scales, bringing moments of personality and playfulness to the larger reception details.
The result was a collection that felt thoughtfully connected from ceremony to reception. Each piece had its own purpose and personality, but together, the details told one cohesive story.
Planning a Chicago Wedding of Your Own?
Bridget & Steve's wedding is a perfect example of how wedding stationery is part of the larger design of a celebration.
From St. Clement Catholic Church to the Chicago Cultural Center, their wedding moved through two distinctly beautiful Chicago settings. The stationery provided a visual thread between them, creating a collection that felt polished, personal, and timeless.
For couples planning a Chicago wedding, the setting can be an incredible source of inspiration.
Consider:
The architecture of your ceremony venue
The character of your reception space
The places that are meaningful to you as a couple
The colors and textures already present in your venue
The atmosphere you want guests to experience
Then look for the space between classic and unexpected.
Because the most memorable wedding invitations aren't necessarily the ones with the most embellishment or the most elaborate design. They're the ones where every detail feels like it belongs. And the smallest personal details are what makes the entire suite unforgettable.
